Researchers discover rare new tree species in Kerala

- Researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI), Kerala, have discovered a new evergreen tree species from the southern Western Ghats of Kerala.

- The newly discovered species identified in the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary has been officially named, Humboldtia nairiana.
- The species, belonging to the genus Humboldtia, has been named in honour of G.M. Nair, a distinguished plant biotechnologist and former Director of JNTBGRI.
- The species is strictly endemic to Kerala and is presently known only from the biodiversity-rich Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve at an elevation of about 300 meters.
