- The Central Water Commission (erstwhile Central Waterways, Irrigation and Navigation Commission) was established in 1945 as the apex technical organisation in the field of water resources development.

- The Commission was established by the Government in 1945 on the advice of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Member (Labour) in Viceroy’s Executive Council.
- It is presently functioning as an attached office of the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- The Commission is entrusted with the general responsibilities of initiating, and furthering schemes for control, conservation and utilization of water resources throughout the country, for the purpose of Flood Control, Irrigation, Navigation, Drinking Water Supply and Water Power Development.
- CWC is headed by a Chairman, with the status of Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government of India.
- The headquarters of CWC is located in New Delhi.
