- The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KSO) is India’s oldest and one of the world’s oldest solar observatories. Established in 1899, it is located in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu.
- It holds the distinction of being the country’s longest-running astronomical observatory and maintains one of the world’s most extensive and continuous daily records of the Sun.

- KSO houses a digital repository of over 1.4 lakh digitised solar images and thousands of other images of the Sun recorded every day since the start of the 20th century.
- The Observatory is known for the discovery of the Evershed Effect (radial motions in sunspots) in 1909.
- KSO is operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, an autonomous research institute wholly funded by the Department of Science and Technology.
