  • Ports<\/strong> in India <\/strong>handle around 95% of EXIM Cargo by volume and 70% by value. <\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The country hosts 12 major ports and 200+ non-major (minor) ports <\/strong>across its coastline.  \n

    • The major ports<\/strong> (governed by the Major Port Authorities Act, 2021<\/strong>) are wholly-owned by the Government of India<\/strong> and operate under the administrative purview of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways<\/strong>, while non-major ports<\/strong> fall under the jurisdiction of respective States.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n

      • In 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the setting up of a Major Port at Vadhavan,<\/strong> Maharashtra<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        • Public-Private Partnership (PPP) participation is allowed<\/strong> through a concession agreement<\/strong> for specific projects, berths, or terminals within these major ports.  \n

          • This participation is secured via an open competitive bidding process<\/strong>, where the concessionaire pays revenue share or royalty for a fixed period<\/strong>. Once the concession period concludes<\/strong>, the port assets are returned<\/strong> to the port authority.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • All Major Ports except Kamrajar<\/strong> are administered by the respective Port Trusts, <\/strong>which are autonomus bodies.<\/strong>\n

              • The\u00a0Vizhinjam\u00a0International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Kerala<\/strong>, inaugurated in May 2025, marks a strategic shift towards\u00a0reducing reliance on foreign ports\u00a0<\/strong>like Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai for container handling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                • As India\u2019s first dedicated container transshipment port, <\/strong>Vizhinjam leverages its natural draft of about 20 metres, requiring minimal capital dredging, <\/strong>and its proximity <\/strong>(just 10 nautical miles<\/strong>) to international shipping routes<\/strong> linking Europe, West Asia and the Far East \u2014 the east-west shipping axis. \n

                  • A transshipment port is a hub where cargo is unloaded from one ship and reloaded onto another to continue its journey to a final destination, acting as a crucial transfer point for global trade when direct routes are unavailable or inefficient. <\/em> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • It is also India\u2019s first semi-automated port<\/strong> equipped with remote-controlled quay cranes and an AI-powered vessel traffic management system<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
