This plant is found in <strong>freshwater ponds<\/strong> <strong>throughout South and East Asia.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The edible part of the Makhana consists of small, round seeds that have an outer layer ranging from black to brown. This has led to it being referred to as the<strong> \u2018Black Diamond.\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"177\" src=\"https:\/\/materials.simplycurrentaffairs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1599\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After processing, these seeds are often consumed as popped snacks known as<strong> \u2018lava.\u2019<\/strong> Makhana is <strong>highly nutritious <\/strong>and provides an<strong> excellent source of carbohydrates, protein, and minerals.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Production in India:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> is the<strong> largest producer of makhana in the world<\/strong>, accounting for <strong>nearly 80 per cent of global production<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bihar<\/strong> accounts for around <strong>90 per cent of India&#8217;s makhana output.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GI-tagged Mithila Makhana<\/strong> has already been shipped to overseas markets, and the government is promoting consignments to countries including the UAE, the US and other Western markets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Climatic Conditions for Makhana Cultivation:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Makhana is an <strong>aquatic crop<\/strong> and is mainly grown in<strong> tropical and subtropical regions.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is traditionally cultivated in<strong> stagnant water bodies<\/strong> such as ponds, land depressions, lakes, ditches, or wetlands with <strong>shallow water depths of up to 4-6 feet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"344\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/materials.simplycurrentaffairs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/materials.simplycurrentaffairs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-11.png 344w, class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For optimal growth and development, Makhana requires a<strong> temperature range of 20-35\u00b0C, relative humidity of 50-90%,<\/strong> and<strong> annual rainfall between 100-250 cm.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>National Makhana Board<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2025, the Government of India established the <strong>National Makhana Board in Purnea, Bihar<\/strong> to help scale up production, processing and exports of makhana.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To support this initiative, the Government has also approved a <strong>Central Sector Scheme for Development of Makhana<\/strong> to <strong>modernise and expand the makhana sector.<\/strong>\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The scheme, which will run from 2025-26 to 2030-31, aims to <strong>develop the entire value chain from farm to export<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its primary focus areas include <strong>research and innovation, the production of quality seeds, and extensive farmer capacity
