{"id":1587,"date":"2026-08-08T06:43:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/materials.simplycurrentaffairs.com\/?p=1587"},"modified":"2026-08-13T06:46:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T06:46:22","slug":"jal-jeevan-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/materials.simplycurrentaffairs.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/08\/jal-jeevan-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Jal Jeevan Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Jal Jeevan Mission<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>About<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched in <strong>2019<\/strong> to <strong>enable all rural households to have functional household tap connection (FHTC) by 2024<\/strong> (<strong>Har Ghar Nal Se Jal<\/strong>)<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The goal of JJM is to provide FHTC to every household with service level at the rate of <strong>55 litres per capita per day (lpcd).\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This Mission is under the <strong>Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation,<\/strong> <strong>Ministry of Jal Shakti.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"281\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/materials.simplycurrentaffairs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1588\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Mission also aims to provide <strong>functional tap connections to Schools, Anganwadi centres, Gram Panchayat buildings, Health centres, wellness centres and community buildings.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Mission gives <strong>emphasis to <\/strong><strong>source sustainability measures <\/strong>such as recharge and reuse through greywater management, water conservation and rainwater harvesting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every water supply asset created under Jal Jeevan Mission is <strong>geo-tagged.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is implemented through a <strong>community-based approach<\/strong> and seeks to build a<strong> Jan Andolan (people\u2019s movement) <\/strong>for water, making it a shared national priority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Fund Sharing:<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The fund sharing pattern is <strong>90:10 for Himalayan and North-Eastern States; 50:50 for other States and 100% for Union Territories.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group border-list\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Did you know?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From the baseline of 3.23 crore (17%) rural households with tap water connections in 2019, so far, more than 12.56 crore additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections under JJM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><strong>Significance:<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong> World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> estimates that achieving the Mission&#8217;s goals will <strong>save women 5.5 crore hours daily previously spent <\/strong>collecting water and<strong> prevent nearly 400,000 deaths <\/strong>from diarrheal diseases.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nobel laureate Prof. Michael Kremer<\/strong> suggests safe water coverage could <strong>reduce under-five child mortality by almost 30%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>JJM 2.0<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In March 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the <strong>extension of Jal Jeevan Mission to 2028<\/strong> and transform the programme from a <strong>primarily infrastructure-driven initiative to a citizen-centric utility model<\/strong> ensuring sustainable piped potable water supply in rural areas.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>JJM 2.0<\/strong> would facilitate the <strong>certification of all Gram Panchayats as \u2018Har Ghar Jal\u2019, <\/strong>by provisioning tap water connection to all the rural households across the country by 2028.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As part of structural reforms, the government will introduce a <strong>national digital framework<\/strong> called <strong>\u201cSujalam Bharat\u201d,<\/strong> which will <strong>assign each village a unique Sujal Gaon or Service Area ID.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The system will <strong>digitally map the entire drinking water supply chain<\/strong>\u2014from source to household tap\u2014to improve monitoring, transparency and accountability.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To<strong> encourage community ownership<\/strong> of water systems, the mission will introduce <strong>\u201cJal Utsav\u201d,<\/strong> an annual community-led event focused on reviewing and maintaining local water supply infrastructure while promoting collective responsibility for water sustainability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jal Jeevan Mission About Fund Sharing: Did you know?
