  • Commercial coal mining in India marks a major shift from the government-dominated monopoly<\/strong> that emerged after the nationalisation of coal mines in 1971 and 1973 <\/strong>under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/mark>\n

    • The nationalisation aimed to end unscientific mining practices and improve the poor working conditions of labourers in private coal mines. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Historically, the private sector was restricted to captive mining,<\/strong> where they could only mine coal for their own specific industrial use<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • In 2020<\/strong>, the Government of India officially opened the coal sector to the private sector for commercial use<\/strong>, allowing companies to mine coal and sell it freely in the open market without any end-use restrictions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
