About<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  • The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) was established as a statutory body<\/strong> under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 <\/strong>in 1992.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The main objective of this Authority is to complement and strengthen the national effort in conservation of rich biodiversity of the country, particularly the fauna.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Other objectives of this Authority include enforcing minimum standards and norms for upkeep and healthcare of animals in Indian zoos<\/strong> and to control mushrooming of unplanned and ill-conceived zoos<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Authority functions under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change <\/strong>and consists of a Chairman (Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change), ten members and a Member Secretary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Functions of CZA<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    • Every zoo in the country is required to obtain recognition<\/strong> from the Authority for its operation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The Authority\u2019s role is more of a facilitator than a regulator.<\/strong> It therefore provides technical and financial assistance<\/strong> to such zoos which have the potential to attain the desired standard in animal management.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Apart from the primary function of grant of recognition, the Central Zoo Authority also regulates the exchange of animals of endangered category<\/strong> listed under Schedule- I and II of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 among zoos.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Exchange of animals between Indian and foreign zoos<\/strong> is also approved by the Authority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
