  • The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) \u201cUDAN\u201d (Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik) was launched in 2016<\/strong> by the Ministry of Civil Aviation <\/strong>to provide connectivity to un-served and under-served airports <\/strong>of the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • It aims to achieve its objective through revival of existing air-strips and airports <\/strong>to make flying affordable <\/strong>to the common citizen, especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • UDAN operates on a market-driven model,<\/strong> where airlines assess demand on specific routes and submit proposals during bidding rounds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The scheme incentivizes airlines<\/strong> to connect underserved regions by offering them support through Viability Gap Funding (VGF)<\/strong> and various concessions<\/strong> provided by airport operators, the Central Government, and State Governments.\u00a0\n

    • VGF is a financial grant provided by the government to support projects that are economically justified but commercially unviable.<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The Airports Authority of India (AAI) <\/strong>is designated as the Implementing Agency under this Scheme.\u00a0\n

      • AAI is a statutory body, under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Civil Aviation.<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Following four successful rounds of the scheme, the Ministry of Civil Aviation launched UDAN 5.0<\/strong> in 2023 <\/strong>to further enhance the connectivity to remote areas and achieve last mile connectivity through helicopters.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        • The Government of India has launched the Modified UDAN Scheme <\/strong>to accelerate aviation-led development.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The Modified UDAN Scheme focuses on expanding regional aviation infrastructure <\/strong>through the development of 100 airports from existing unserved airstrips<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • It also provides financial support<\/strong> for Operations and Maintenance of regional airports, development of 200 modern helipads, and continued Viability Gap Funding to sustain regional airline operations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
