  • The\u202fUnited Nations\u202f(UN) is an international organization<\/strong> founded in 1945 after the Second World War<\/strong> by 51 countries<\/strong> committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations<\/strong> and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.<\/strong>\u00a0\n
      \n
    • The predecessor<\/strong> of the UN <\/strong>was the League of Nations<\/strong>, established in 1919<\/strong>, after World War I<\/strong>, under the Treaty of Versailles.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Currently made up of 193 Member States <\/strong>(including India<\/strong>), the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The UN has six official languages<\/strong>: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, <\/strong>and Spanish.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Six\u202fPrincipal Organs<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      • The\u202fUN Charter<\/strong>\u202festablished six\u202fprincipal organs<\/strong>\u202fof the United Nations: the\u202fGeneral Assembly, the\u202fSecurity Council,\u202fthe\u202fEconomic and Social Council, the\u202fTrusteeship Council, the\u202fInternational Court of Justice, <\/strong>and the\u202fSecretariat.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • All were established in 1945<\/strong> when the UN was founded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        1. General Assembly:<\/span><\/strong>\n
            \n
          • The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ <\/strong>of the UN.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • All 193 Member States<\/strong> of the UN are represented<\/strong> in the General Assembly, making it the only UN body with universal representation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Security Council:<\/span><\/strong>\n
              \n
            • The Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • It has 15 Members:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • 5 permanent<\/strong> members <\/strong>(China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • 10 non-permanent members<\/strong>, elected for two years<\/strong> by the General Assembly<\/strong>, taking into account a geographical distribution<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Each member<\/strong> of the Council has one vote<\/strong>. Resolutions<\/strong> are adopted when supported by a majority of votes of nine out of fifteen votes<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Permanent members<\/strong> have the right to veto<\/strong>. Any decision of the Council is rejected if one of the permanent members uses it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Under the UN Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Economic and Social Council:<\/span><\/strong>\n
                \n
              • The Economic and Social Council is the principal body<\/strong> for coordination, policy review and dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, <\/strong>as well as implementation of internationally agreed development goals.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • It has 54 Members<\/strong>, elected by the General Assembly<\/strong> for overlapping three-year terms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • Trusteeship Council:<\/span><\/strong>\n
                  \n
                • The Trusteeship Council was established to provide international supervision for 11 Trust Territories<\/strong> \u2013 areas that at the time were administered by 7 of the UN Member States.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • The Council was established to ensure that adequate steps were taken to prepare the Territories for self-government and independence.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • The Trusteeship Council suspended its operations on 1 November 1994, <\/strong>a month after the independence of Palau<\/strong>, the last remaining United Nations trust territory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • International Court of Justice:<\/span><\/strong>\n
                    \n
                  • The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • Its seat is at the Peace Palace<\/strong> in The Hague (Netherlands).\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\n
                      \n
                    • It is the only one of the six principal organs<\/strong> of the United Nations not located in New York (United States of America).<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • The Court\u2019s role is to settle<\/strong>, in accordance with international law, legal disputes <\/strong>submitted to it by States and to give advisory opinions<\/strong> on legal questions referred to it by authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • Secretariat:<\/span><\/strong>\n
                        \n
                      • The Secretariat carries out the day-to-day work<\/strong> of the UN as mandated by the General Assembly and the Organization’s other main bodies.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                      • The Secretary-General is the head of the Secretariat<\/strong>, who is appointed by the General Assembly<\/strong> on the recommendation of the Security Council <\/strong>for a five-year, renewable term.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\n
                          \n
                        • The Secretary-General, described by the UN Charter as the Organization\u2019s \u201cChief Administrative Officer,\u201d<\/strong> also serves as a symbol of the UN\u2019s ideals and an advocate for all the world\u2019s people, particularly the poor and vulnerable.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                        • The Charter also empowers<\/strong> the Secretary-General to “bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter<\/strong>, which in his or her opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security<\/strong>“.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                            • The election of the next UN Secretary-General is underway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                              What is the process?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
                                \n
                              • The 15-member Security Council <\/strong>will formally recommend a candidate<\/strong> to the 193-member General Assembly<\/strong> for election as the 10th U.N. secretary-general <\/strong>later this year.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                              • The Security Council will hold secret ballots<\/strong> \u2013 referred to as a straw poll <\/strong>\u2013 until a consensus <\/strong>is reached on a candidate. The choices<\/strong> council members are given for each candidate in the straw poll are: encourage, discourage or no opinion.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                              • The Security Council<\/strong> then adopts a resolution<\/strong>, traditionally behind closed doors, recommending an appointment to the General Assembly<\/strong>. The resolution needs nine votes <\/strong>in favor and no vetoes <\/strong>to pass.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                              • Once the General Assembly<\/strong> confirms<\/strong> the choice through a simple majority vote<\/strong>, the new Secretary-General will take office on January 1, 2027.\u00a0\n
