  • Prime Minister\u2019s WiFi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) is an initiative of the Department of Telecommunication, Ministry of Communications<\/strong> to enhance the proliferation of public WiFi hotspots <\/strong>to create robust digital communications infrastructure in the country, especially in rural areas.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Launched in 2020<\/strong>, PM-WANI aims to build a decentralized network of public Wi-Fi hotspots<\/strong>, enabling local shops<\/strong> and establishments<\/strong> to provide last-mile internet delivery<\/strong> without requiring a licence or paying a registration fee.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Working of PM-WANI<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    • To access public hotspots<\/strong> under the PM-WANI scheme one needs to download a relevant App<\/strong> which shows the available networks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The user can then choose from a list of available connections and make a payment to use the network.<\/strong> The user can access the network till his\/her balance is exhausted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Components of PM-WANI<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      • The PM-WANI ecosystem consists of four parts:<\/strong> Public Data Office (PDO), Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA), App Provider, and Central Registry.<\/strong>\u00a0\n
          \n
        • PDO establishes the Wi-Fi Hotspots and provides internet access to users.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • PDOA provides authorisation and accounting services to PDOs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The app provider displays the available hotspots in the phone\u2019s proximity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The central registry, which is overseen by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT),<\/strong> maintains details of App Providers, PDOs, and PDOAs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
