  • The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is an\u00a0inter-governmental<\/strong> organisation<\/strong>, established in 1997<\/strong>. It unites the\u00a0Indian Ocean coastal and island states\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0promote sustainable growth and balanced development\u00a0<\/strong>of the region and its member states.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    • The vision for IORA, formerly known as the\u00a0Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC),<\/strong>\u00a0originated during a visit by the late\u00a0President Nelson Mandela\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa to\u00a0India<\/strong>\u00a0in 1995 where he mentioned: \u201cthe natural urge of the facts of history and geography should broaden itself to include the concept of an Indian Ocean Rim for socio-economic co-operation and other peaceful\u00a0endeavours\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Members<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      • IORA brings together\u00a023 countries of the Indian Ocean<\/strong>: Australia, Bangladesh, the Comoros, France,\u00a0India<\/strong>, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • In addition, the association is supported by\u00a012 dialogue partners<\/strong>, which include China, Egypt, the European Union, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, T\u00fcrkiye, the United Kingdom, and the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Structure<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        • The IORA\u00a0Council of Ministers (COM)<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0highest decision-making body\u00a0<\/strong>of the organization,\u00a0comprising\u00a0the\u00a0Ministers of Foreign Affairs of all Member States.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\n
            \n
          • The COM meets annually, or more often as mutually decided to discuss policy and set strategic direction.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Decisions made within IORA are reached by\u00a0consensus\u00a0<\/strong>and commitments are undertaken on a\u00a0voluntary basis.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • The IORA Secretariat is based in\u00a0Mauritius\u00a0<\/strong>and is headed by a fixed term\u00a0Secretary-General.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • IORA became an\u00a0observer to the UN General Assembly<\/strong>\u00a0in 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            • The Association addresses\u00a0six priority areas<\/strong><\/mark>:<\/strong>\u00a0Maritime Safety & Security, Trade & investment Facilitation, Fisheries Management, Disaster Risk Management, Tourism & Cultural Exchanges and Academic, Science & Technology Cooperation as well as\u00a0two cross-cutting issues:<\/strong>\u00a0Blue Economy and Women\u2019s Economic Empowerment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
