  • The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority was\u00a0established\u00a0in\u00a01997<\/strong>\u00a0as an\u00a0independent body of experts to regulate the pricing of drugs.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • It has been constituted as an\u00a0attached office\u00a0<\/strong>of the\u00a0Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Authority has been entrusted with the task of\u202f\u00a0\n
      \n
    • Fixation\/revision of prices\u00a0<\/strong>of pharmaceutical products;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Enforcement\u00a0<\/strong>of provisions of the\u00a0Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Monitoring of the prices\u00a0<\/strong>of controlled and decontrolled drugs in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Drug Price Control Orders:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

      • Drug Price Control Orders are issued by the\u00a0Government of India<\/strong>, in exercise of the powers conferred under the\u00a0Essential Commodities Act, 1955<\/strong>, for enabling the Government to declare a\u00a0ceiling price for essential and\u00a0life saving\u00a0medicines.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The latest Drug Price Control Order (DPCO-2013<\/strong>) was issued in 2013.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

        NPPA\u2019s Role in Fixing Drug Prices<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        • The\u00a0NPPA fixes ceiling prices of medicines<\/strong>\u00a0included in the\u00a0National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM)<\/strong>\u00a0issued by the\u00a0Ministry of Health and Family Welfare<\/strong>\u00a0and incorporated in\u00a0Schedule-I to the DPCO, 2013.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\n
            \n
          • All manufacturers, marketers and importers of scheduled medicines are\u00a0required\u00a0to sell their products within such ceiling price (plus\u00a0applicable\u00a0local taxes).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • The\u00a0ceiling prices of scheduled medicines<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0revised annually<\/strong>\u00a0on the basis of\u00a0Wholesale\u00a0Price Index (WPI)<\/strong>\u00a0by NPPA.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Non-scheduled drugs<\/strong>\u00a0are allowed an increase of\u00a0up to 10 per cent in prices every year<\/strong>, which is\u00a0monitored\u00a0by the NPPA.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • NPPA can\u00a0also fix the price for non-scheduled drugs\u00a0<\/strong>by invoking extraordinary powers in\u00a0public interest<\/strong>, under DPCO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
