class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Background<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Article 124 (1)\u00a0<\/strong>of\u00a0<strong>Constitution of India<\/strong>\u00a0provided \u201cThere shall be a\u00a0<strong>Supreme Court of India<\/strong>\u00a0consisting of a\u00a0<strong>Chief Justice of India<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(CJI)<\/strong>\u00a0and,\u00a0<strong>until Parliament by law prescribes a larger number<\/strong>, of<strong>\u00a0not more than seven other Judges.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To increase the Court\u2019s strength, Parliament enacted the\u00a0<strong>Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956<\/strong>, raising the number of judges (excluding the CJI) from 7 to\u00a0<strong>10.<\/strong>\u00a0Subsequently, the sanctioned strength was increased to\u00a0<strong>13<\/strong>\u00a0in 1960 and to<strong>\u00a017<\/strong>\u00a0in 1977 through amendments to the Act.\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0working strength<\/strong>\u00a0of the Court was, however,\u00a0<strong>restricted to 15 Judges<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>by the Cabinet, excluding the Chief Justice of India<\/strong>, till the end of<strong>\u00a01979<\/strong>, when the\u00a0<strong>restriction was withdrawn at the request of the Chief Justice of India.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thereafter, the strength of the Court was<strong>\u00a0progressively expanded<\/strong>: from 17 to\u00a0<strong>25\u00a0<\/strong>judges in 1986, from 25 to<strong>\u00a030<\/strong>\u00a0in 2008, and from 30 to<strong>\u00a033<\/strong>\u00a0in 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Why in\u00a0News?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Cabinet has approved the introduction of the<strong>\u00a0Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026<\/strong>\u00a0in Parliament.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proposed legislation seeks to\u00a0<strong>amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>increasing the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court\u00a0<\/strong>from 33 to\u00a0<strong>37 judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cabinet
