  • The post of Chief of\u00a0Defence\u00a0Staff (CDS) was created in\u00a02019<\/strong>\u00a0as\u00a0part of reforms in higher\u00a0defence\u00a0management<\/strong>\u00a0in India.\u00a0\u00a0\n
      \n
    • The creation of a CDS was suggested in 1999 by the\u00a0Kargil Review Committee (KRC)<\/strong>\u00a0headed by\u00a0K Subrahmanyam<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0single-point professional military advice to the political leadership.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The CDS holds the\u00a0rank of a four-star General<\/strong>, with\u00a0salary and\u00a0perks\u00a0equivalent to those of a Service Chief<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The CDS is the\u00a0Principal Military Adviser to the\u00a0Defence\u00a0Minister on all tri-Services matters<\/mark>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Permanent\u00a0Chairman\u00a0Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC)<\/mark>\u00a0<\/strong>which has the three service chiefs as members.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The CDS also\u00a0heads\u00a0the Department of Military Affairs (DMA),<\/strong>\u00a0established\u00a0within the\u00a0Ministry of\u00a0Defence<\/strong>, and functions as its\u00a0Secretary.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Mandate<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • The broad mandate of the CDS includes\u00a0bringing about jointness<\/strong>\u00a0in operations,\u00a0logistics, transport, training, support services, communications,\u00a0repairs\u00a0and maintenance of the three Services.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The CDS is also meant to bring about\u00a0synergy\u00a0and\u00a0optimise\u00a0procurements, training and\u00a0logistics\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0facilitate\u00a0restructuring of military commands<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0optimal\u00a0utilisation\u00a0of resources.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The CDS\u00a0do not exercise any military command<\/mark><\/strong>,\u00a0including over\u00a0the three Service Chiefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
