About<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  • BRICS is an intergovernmental forum <\/strong>that brings together eleven major emerging economies and developing countries:<\/strong> Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, <\/strong>and Iran<\/strong>.<\/mark>  \n
      \n
    • The group was originally composed <\/strong>of Brazil, Russia, India, and China<\/strong>, and was expanded for the first time with the admission of South Africa<\/strong> in 2011.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • During the 15th Summit in Johannesburg, in 2023, the BRICS leaders decided for a new expansion, admitting Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, <\/strong>and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia<\/strong> formally accepted the invitation to join the group in 2024.  \n

      • BRICS introduced a new \u201cpartner countries\u201d<\/strong> category at its 2024 summit. Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam have this designation. While falling short of full member status, the \u201cpartner countries\u201d classification allows them to participate in BRICS summits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        • It serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum<\/strong> for countries from the Global South<\/strong> and for coordination in the most diverse areas. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • The BRICS presidency rotates annually <\/strong>among its member countries.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Note:<\/em><\/strong> The BRICS does not constitute an international organization, nor a formal group.<\/strong> Rather, it is a forum, a group, or a coordination and cooperation mechanism <\/strong>among countries of the Global South.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Institutional Framework<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

            • During the VI BRICS Summit<\/strong>, held in Fortaleza<\/strong> in 2014<\/strong>, member countries established the New Development Bank (NDB)<\/strong> and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              New Development Bank:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
                \n
              • The NDB is a multilateral development bank<\/strong> established with the goal of mobilizing resources to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects<\/strong> in developing countries.<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • The NDB is based in\u00a0Shanghai, China.<\/mark><\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • The Bank\u2019s membership is open to members of the United Nations. <\/strong> \n
                  \n
                • In addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China, <\/strong>and South Africa <\/strong>\u2014 the founding members of the NDB \u2014 the bank’s membership has expanded to include Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Algeria, Colombia and Uzbekistan.<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • Adhesion to the BRICS does not guarantee membership in the NDB.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                  Contingency Reserve\u202fArrangement<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong>:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
                    \n
                  • The CRA is a mutual financial support platform<\/strong> to which BRICS members can turn in the event of difficulties in their balance of payments. <\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • The CRA is fully operational and can be accessed at any time by initiative of one of the members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                    • The theme <\/strong>for India’s BRICS Chairship this year is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
