Overseas Citizens of India<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Who are OCI?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  • The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Scheme<\/strong> was introduced by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955<\/strong> in 2005.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The scheme provides for the registration of Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) <\/strong>as Overseas Citizens of India<\/strong>, provided they were citizens of India on or after 26th January 1950, <\/strong>or were eligible to become citizens on that date. <\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • A PIO<\/strong> means a foreign citizen<\/strong> whose ancestors were a permanent Indian resident <\/strong>and, at some point, held an Indian passport.<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • However, individuals<\/strong> who are or had been or whose parent or grandparent or great grandparent citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh <\/strong>(or such other country as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify) are not eligible.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Benefits & Restrictions:<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    • A registered OCI is granted multiple entry, multipurpose, life-long visa <\/strong>for visiting India and he\/she is exempted from registration<\/strong> with Foreign Regional Registration Officer or Foreign Registration Officer<\/strong> for any length of stay in India. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • OCI is entitled to general parity with Non-Resident Indians<\/strong> in respect of all facilities available to them in economic, financial and educational fields except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The OCI card holder is NOT entitled:<\/strong> \n
        \n
      • To vote<\/strong>; <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • To be a member of a Legislative Assembly or of a Legislative Council or of the Parliament of India<\/strong>; <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • To hold Indian constitutional posts<\/strong> such as that of the President, Vice President, Judge of the Supreme Court or High Court etc.; <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • He\/she cannot normally hold employment in the Government;<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • To undertake any Missionary work, Mountaineering and Journalism work without prior permission<\/strong> of the Govt. of India;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • OCI cardholder shall also require Protected Area Permit (PAP)\/Restricted Area Permit (RAP)<\/strong> to visit any place which falls within the Protected\/Restricted Area notified by the Government as in the case of any other foreigner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
