  • The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a permanent international court <\/strong>established in 2002<\/strong> following the adoption of the Rome Statute<\/strong> (1998). <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • It is an independent judicial body distinct from the UN.<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The ICC was established as a court of last resort<\/strong> to prosecute the most heinous offenses <\/strong>in cases where national courts fail to act.<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Unlike the International Court of Justice (ICJ)<\/strong>, which hears disputes between states, <\/strong>the ICC handles prosecutions of individuals.<\/strong>  \n

        • The Court may exercise jurisdiction in a situation where genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes<\/strong> were committed on or after 1 July 2002 <\/strong>(when Rome Statute entered into force) and: \n
            \n
          • the crimes were committed by a State Party national<\/strong>, or in the territory of a State Party<\/strong>, or in a State that has accepted the jurisdiction of the Court<\/strong>; or <\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • the crimes were referred to the ICC Prosecutor by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
