India’s Rice Production

News

  • India’s rice production has increased steadily over the years. Between 1969-70 and 2024-25, the area under paddy cultivation increased by more than 36%, yield tripled and production almost quadrupled.
  • Consequently, India’s share in the global output also increased from 21.95% in 2011 to 28% in 2024.
  • While India (150 million metric tonnes) and China (145.28 million tonnes) are nearly neck and neck at the top two places, other countries are far behind them. Bangladesh (36.6 million metric tonnes) and Indonesia (34.1 million metric tonnes) are at a distant third and fourth place, respectively.
    • India is also the world’s leading rice exporter.
